Deutsche Bank Plans Crypto Custody Launch

Deutsche Bank plans to launch a regulated digital-asset custody service for institutional and corporate clients in Europe before the end of 2026. The offering will initially support Bitcoin, Ether and selected stablecoins while allowing clients to hold and transfer digital assets without operating their own custody infrastructure. The service remains subject to completion of the applicable regulatory process before its first clients can be onboarded.

According to Deutsche Bank’s official September 16 announcement, the initial asset lineup will include BTC, ETH, USDC, EURC and EURAU, with additional assets potentially added according to client demand, regulatory requirements and the bank’s internal product-approval and risk-management processes. Tokenized financial instruments are also included in the longer-term product roadmap.

Deutsche Bank Targets Institutional Crypto Custody

The service will target clients of Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Bank and Investment Bank. Potential users include corporations, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers and sovereign institutions, although onboarding will depend on due diligence, the bank’s risk appetite and other internal requirements.

Deutsche Bank will manage wallets and private keys on behalf of clients rather than requiring institutions to build their own technical custody systems. The platform combines hardware-based key protection, segregated warm and cold storage, multi-person approvals, separation of duties and controlled backup and recovery procedures. Selected external technology and infrastructure providers will support defined components of the service.

The bank is positioning custody as foundational infrastructure for a broader shift toward blockchain-based financial products. Deutsche Bank has argued that stablecoins and tokenized securities increasingly require institutional-grade custody as they move into payments, treasury management, settlement and collateral workflows. In a September 9 analysis, the bank described custody as one of the infrastructure layers needed for digital assets to move further into mainstream financial markets.

Tokenized Assets Remain on the Roadmap

The initial rollout is narrower than a full digital-asset banking platform. Deutsche Bank has announced custody and third-party transfer capabilities, but it has not announced spot crypto trading as part of this service. Timing, geographic availability and the precise set of supported assets could also change before launch depending on regulatory and internal approval processes.

Tokenized financial instruments could broaden the platform beyond cryptocurrencies and stablecoins over time. Deutsche Bank sees tokenized securities, tokenized money and conventional crypto assets as distinct categories that can share custody infrastructure, potentially supporting institutional settlement and collateral use cases as those markets develop.

The immediate milestone is therefore regulatory completion rather than market adoption. Deutsche Bank expects to bring its first custody clients onto the platform this year, but actual demand and product expansion will only become measurable after the service goes live. Until then, the announcement represents a planned extension of the bank’s institutional infrastructure rather than an operating crypto custody business.
