Sui and Alibaba Cloud Build Pay-Per-Call Agent Payments

Sui Foundation and Alibaba Cloud are collaborating to bring Alibaba Cloud services into Sui Agent Payments, creating a payment path intended to let AI agents purchase cloud and AI resources within budgets defined by their owners. According to the official Sui Foundation announcement, unveiled at Sui Basecamp in Singapore, the planned integration would allow agents to pay for individual service calls onchain rather than relying on conventional subscription or invoicing flows. Sui said AI agents will be able to purchase cloud and AI capacity directly through its infrastructure.

The service is not yet publicly available. Sui’s Agent Payments directory currently says services are “coming soon,” while its developer materials describe a system in which agents discover priced services, pay per call in USDC and receive a receipt verifiable on Sui. The announcement therefore establishes the intended payment architecture, not a production deployment already processing Alibaba Cloud transactions. Neither side has published a launch date, pricing schedule, supported Alibaba services or customer-usage metrics.

Budgets Replace Unrestricted Agent Spending

The payment model centers on scoped authority. Sui says an owner can establish spending limits before an agent acts, allowing software to make purchases autonomously without receiving unrestricted control over the user’s funds. Each successful payment settles onchain and generates a receipt. That separation between authorization and execution is designed to let agents transact independently while retaining predefined financial boundaries.

Alibaba Cloud would extend that framework to infrastructure consumption. Sui says agents will be able to purchase cloud and AI capacity directly through the payment layer, while the collaboration creates a new distribution channel for Alibaba Cloud services aimed at software agents. The approach resembles other attempts to connect autonomous software with metered infrastructure, including io.net’s use of x402 for autonomous compute payments. Per-call settlement is particularly relevant to AI workloads because usage can vary continuously rather than fitting neatly into fixed subscription tiers.

Sui’s broader agent-commerce architecture also incorporates emerging payment standards rather than relying on a completely proprietary stack. The Foundation has described Google’s AP2 as a framework for communicating agent authorization and x402 as a mechanism for triggering machine-readable payments, with Sui providing the underlying settlement layer. That same agent-payment trend is developing elsewhere as Bitcoin Lightning is added to x402 and other networks experiment with autonomous commerce. Sui’s differentiator is its attempt to combine authorization, service discovery, payment and verifiable receipts within one onchain workflow.

Stablecoins Move Into Machine-Driven Workflows

The Alibaba collaboration also extends Sui’s existing stablecoin-payment strategy. The network already supports production payment infrastructure such as gasless stablecoin settlement for Daya, where USDC can move without customers separately holding SUI for transaction fees. Agent Payments applies the same broader idea of reducing payment friction to software-driven purchases rather than human-initiated transfers.

Still, infrastructure availability and adoption remain separate. The current Sui directory has not yet opened its service catalog, and neither Sui nor Alibaba Cloud has disclosed transaction volumes, participating enterprise customers or commercial usage targets for the integration. Similar questions remain around broader AI-agent marketplaces combining execution and payments, where technical capability can arrive well before sustained economic demand. The measurable development today is a confirmed infrastructure collaboration; evidence of adoption will require actual service availability, recurring agent purchases and onchain payment activity once the Alibaba Cloud integration launches.
