Dune Cuts Workforce by 25% as AI Data Strategy Takes Priority

Crypto data platform Dune reduced its workforce by about 25% around May 14–15, 2026, as part of a strategic restructuring focused on AI tooling and institutional on-chain data products. The move shifts Dune’s operating focus from broad retail analytics to AI-driven workflows and enterprise-grade data services for financial institutions.

The restructuring aligns with Dune’s Model Context Protocol strategy, which the company launched in March 2026. Leadership framed the change as a capital-efficient reallocation of resources, not an immediate distress response, with engineering and product capacity redirected toward higher-value institutional use cases.

MCP Turns Natural Language Into On-Chain Analytics

Dune’s MCP server is now positioned at the center of its product roadmap. The protocol lets AI agents and users query a data warehouse spanning more than 100 blockchains through natural-language prompts rather than manual SQL.

That change materially lowers the barrier to dashboard creation. Instead of requiring analysts to write SQL and configure bespoke data infrastructure, MCP converts user intent into queries and workflows, shortening the path from question to usable output.

“With Dune MCP, teams and agents can now build dashboards and workflows without needing to know anything about SQL nor data infrastructure,” said Fredrik Haga, Dune’s co-founder and CEO. The statement captures the company’s push to simplify analytics for non-technical teams.

The workflow is straightforward: a user or AI agent submits a natural-language request, MCP maps it to Dune’s warehouse, and the platform generates a dashboard or workflow without manual query authoring.

Institutional Demand Reshapes the Product Roadmap

Removing SQL as the entry point reduces cognitive load and onboarding friction. The key advantage is faster time-to-insight, especially for users who need repeatable reporting without maintaining dedicated data infrastructure.

The trade-off is risk concentration in the MCP translation layer. If AI-generated queries are misinterpreted, permission transparency, error handling and output explainability become critical to maintaining user trust.

Dune is also leaning into tailored institutional services for clients preparing to tokenize traditional assets. That strategy creates longer sales cycles and deeper integration requirements, but it can also raise lifetime value per customer if audit, compliance and reporting needs are met.

The white-glove institutional focus changes the company’s product economics. Instead of prioritizing incremental retail dashboard features, Dune is reallocating resources toward automated, high-volume and compliance-sensitive data workflows.

Tokenization teams, compliance officers and treasury desks need auditable on-chain data, faster reporting and stronger governance controls as digital assets move into regulated workflows.

Dune’s restructuring therefore reflects a broader market shift: on-chain analytics is becoming less about community dashboards and more about AI-assisted infrastructure for institutional decision-making.

The next execution test will be reliability. As AI agents become primary interfaces to Dune’s data, product and UX teams must prioritize clear confirmations, permission controls, interpretability and robust failure states to preserve confidence in automated analytics.
